005 Thorn 1738 - 2007

Going back in history, but having it's presence felt in today's plans for Houghton 's growth, annually in June Houghton Regis Baptist Church revisits the site of the first Baptist worship on what is currently Fensome's farm at Thorn.   Mention of the word 'quiet' in the poem below no longer applies - courtesy of the close vicinity of the new A5 - M1 road link. It did apply when the poem was written. There site is now surrounded with new housing.

1738 – 2007

This quiet spot,
this quiet evening,
the echo of
“Be still”.

Written on grassy parchment
is a resonance of God’s house
from “once upon a time”
generations ago.

The only markings left – timeworn gravestones,
foundation indentations,
and a new generation
who worship
occasionally,
on this quiet spot,
and remember those
whose tears and laughter
led them to the house of God.

This quiet spot
speaking:
“with my mouth I will make
Your faithfulness known
through all generations”
