Postcard of Houghton Hall taken by Charles Smy

A second post card sent by Mr W Pearce to his family in London during WW1, address:

Miss Hilda Pearce, 50 Highclere Street, Lower Sydenham, London, SE.

The card reads:

"Dear Little Hilda, this is a post card of the house where your dad is stopping at, hope your cold is better. From your Dad."

It was a coloured view of Houghton Hall taken by Charles Smy.

Houghton Hall was built by Dame Alice Millard. She was the daughter of Henry Brandreth, Lord of the Manor from about 1654. The Hall was finished in 1700. It was extensively refurbished in 1846. The Hall gradually superseded the old Manor House, which was on the opposite side of the Green (Drury Lane).

The Brandreths lived in the Hall until the death of H.C.F. Brandreth in 1908 when the Hall was sold to Lt Col (later Sir) Dealtry Part.

The Hall was owned by *****, Nacanco and is currently headquarters Office for Britannia Estates an office development company.
