Fred Alsop GB Olympic Triple Jumper

Frederick Alsop lived in Leafields.

Fred Alsop competed for Great Britain in three successive Olympic Games:

  • 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Long Jump and Triple Jump
  • 1964 Summer  Olympics in Tokyo, Long Jump and Triple Jump
  • 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, Triple Jump

His best result was fourth place in the Triple Jump at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He came very close to winning a medal, leading the first round jumps before being narrowly beaten into fourth place. The Gold Medal Jump was 16m 85cm, Fred jumped 16m 46cm. A difference of only 39 centimetres. He was only 11 centimetres behind the Bronze Medal winner, a Russian who jumped 16m 57cm.

He also represented England and won a bronze medal in the triple jump at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia.

He repeated the achievement four years later by winning another bronze at the 1966 British    Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Fred Alsop was a six times British triple jump champion and three times the British long jump champion. The nine titles were achieved by winning the AAA Championships from 1960 to 1967.

In 1964 a new cul-de-sac was built off Leafields and it was named Alsop Close in his honour.
