Chalk Hill (before the Cutting) showing the junction of the new and diverted road in 1910.
The long building on the right is the Wesleyan Chapel.
The road started at French's Avenue and came out near the present Chalk Hill garage. It cost £16,000 and opened in 1782. It was a problem for stage coaches to go up and was abandoned by 1820 and sold to Henry Brandreth for £20.
A map of the old and new roads can be seen by clicking here.
By 1910 time stage coaches were in decline because of the railway - in 1836 there were 32 coaches through the toll gate but by 1839 only two. In 1836 Parliament voted £10,000 for lowering Chalk Hill and work began in 1837.
