2006 The Burned Down Co-Operative Store High Street Houghton Regis

2006 The Burned Down Co-Operative Store High Street Houghton Regis

In June 2006 there was a huge fire in the centre of Houghton Regis. The Co-Operative store and the popular social facilities above were destroyed.

The blaze was so intense that the High Street was closed because of the danger of collapsing walls.

The only large car park in the town centre was out of action for months during demolition work.

The Co-op had been the largest grocery store in Houghton Regis. It also stocked a large range of electrical and other goods and was greatly missed. Click here to see the store in 2003

The site will become the Central Bedfordshire Council's Houghton Regis Central: Independent living for the 55+. Click here for more details.
