Arthur Fensome demonstrating a machine for crushing mangelwurzels at Thorn Farm 1955.
Mangelwurzel (Beta vulgaris) is root vegetable related to beeroot. Their large yellow or white swollen roots were used as a fodder crop to feed livestock.
Mr Fensome is sitting by the burned remains of the old farm cottages caused by the combine harvester catching fire as it was being started.
