Houghton Hall in 2009
Houghton Hall was built in 1700 by Dame Alice Milard, daughter of Henry Brandreth, Lord of the Manor from c1654.
It gradually superseded the old Manor House, which was on the opposite side of the Green (in Drury Lane, there are no images of the old Manor House). The Hall was extensively re-furbished in 1846.
The Brandreths lived in Houghton Hall until the death of Henry Chernocke Gibbs Brandreth in 1908, when the estate was sold-off. It covered most of Houghton Regis stretching from Blows Downs to Lords Hill and across to Dunstable. This was the time when the population of Bedfordshire was rising and plots of land were sold off for building, others being left as small holdings. The sale advertisement says:
“The important frontage land … particularly that on both sides of the Icknield way … from its situation of 400Ft above sea level is eminently suitable for residential purposes”
